Maid cafes have been around for at least a decade. There are over 200 maid cafes in Japan. Akihabara is one of the homes to several maid cafés, which have become sort of a standard otaku destination. They’re even so popular that a few have sprung up here in the US too!
There is a large competition in Japan among Maid cafes which pushes the different cafes to make there own unique quirks that will bring in the costumers, like there are a few Butler cafes that are like Maid cafes but with young handsome men waiting on you. Another cute quirk is that you can order a special maid character to serve you meaning you almost get a theatrical act as the maid serves your food such as Tsundere (Harsh and Withdrawn affection), Kuudere (Cool and Collective), Imouto (Sweet and Caring little sister), Nadeshiko (Ideal waitress), Dojikko (Clumsy and Flustered), Bokukko (Tomboy), Dandere (Shy, Air-head, Aloof) etc.
Maid cafes are suppose to be a fantasy world its not just catering service, your maid will stay with you all the time. Your maid will prepare all sorts of delicious fancy foods for you with love and happiness and with maid magic powers, it makes the food taste even better. Most people say you don't go to maid cafes for the food you go there for the service so expect to spend a lot of money if you go to one. The dishes and drinks are much more pricier than you'll normally expect it to be, this is because even though the food may only be decent or "okay" it's served very cutely which would brighten you day and of course the maid will serve the food to you with of course her very special maid charm.
These types of places are for anyone who wants to be waited on hand and foot by cute girls in frilly French maid uniforms. Some offer services like family-friendly massages, but this is all in the name of fun—so don’t go in with any dirty ideas. This is usually a place for cheering up or if you want to be treated like royalty a little bit, especially if you had a long day or was treated badly.
